Von Glitschka

Salem graph­ic design­er Von Glitsch­ka has been lend­ing his cre­ative tal­ents to TEDxSalem since it’s incep­tion in 2013. Not only was he a speak­er for our inau­gur­al event, he has designed the year­ly theme graph­ics ever since.

Each year a new theme, a new expe­ri­ence, a new cre­ative devel­op­ment. For 2018, it’s “Through the Look­ing Glass.”

 

“This was the hard­est theme to design for yet,” Glitsch­ka said. “If I tried to get too lit­er­al with it the con­cept became too pigeon holed and locked into one dis­tinct mean­ing. So I had to avoid all those ideas and keep it in a for­mat where the audi­ence could inter­pret it how­ev­er they chose to…”

The chal­lenge pushed Glitsch­ka toward a hand let­ter­ing based design motif.

“It has an aspect of con­cept in it with the eye and spark of inspi­ra­tion but it doesn’t try to define what that insight or inspi­ra­tion is,” he said.

“Hand let­ter­ing this design, means it’s a one of a kind. It’s not cre­at­ed from any exist­ing font, no one else will ever have this exact motif. I think that unique aspect aligns with the ideals of TEDx real­ly well.”

A look­ing glass can be inter­pret­ed in many ways: a mir­ror, a reflec­tion, look­ing at one­self, look­ing at some­thing else/the world/other peo­ple, etc. and Von took to the chal­lenge well. While the theme may lend itself to con­jure visions of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 nov­el Alice’s Adven­tures in Won­der­land and it’s sequel, Through the Look­ing Glass, it aims only to draw on the inspi­ra­tion of an fan­tas­ti­cal world and the idea that step­ping through the doors at TEDxSalem is like climb­ing through the mir­ror and into a new expe­ri­ence where peo­ple can expand their hori­zons, learn some­thing new, and chal­lenge what they (think) they already know.

Von Glitsch­ka is the cre­ative direc­tor and own­er of Glitsch­ka Stu­dios, a small bou­tique design firm in Salem. Its diverse range of illus­tra­tive designs have been used by some of the most respect­ed glob­al brands. The stu­dio cre­ative­ly col­lab­o­rates with ad agen­cies, design firms, cor­po­rate art depart­ments, and small busi­ness­es to pro­duce com­pelling illus­tra­tive design. Glitsch­ka pro­duces his own week­ly con­tent for LinkedIn Learn­ing called “DVG Lab,” which stands for Draw­ing Vec­tor Graph­ics, and show­cas­es the cre­ative process on a vari­ety of projects, styles, and explores new meth­ods and work flows.
