Salem graphic designer Von Glitschka has been lending his creative talents to TEDxSalem since it’s inception in 2013. Not only was he a speaker for our inaugural event, he has designed the yearly theme graphics ever since.
Each year a new theme, a new experience, a new creative development. For 2018, it’s “Through the Looking Glass.”
“This was the hardest theme to design for yet,” Glitschka said. “If I tried to get too literal with it the concept became too pigeon holed and locked into one distinct meaning. So I had to avoid all those ideas and keep it in a format where the audience could interpret it however they chose to…”
The challenge pushed Glitschka toward a hand lettering based design motif.
“It has an aspect of concept in it with the eye and spark of inspiration but it doesn’t try to define what that insight or inspiration is,” he said.
“Hand lettering this design, means it’s a one of a kind. It’s not created from any existing font, no one else will ever have this exact motif. I think that unique aspect aligns with the ideals of TEDx really well.”
A looking glass can be interpreted in many ways: a mirror, a reflection, looking at oneself, looking at something else/the world/other people, etc. and Von took to the challenge well. While the theme may lend itself to conjure visions of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and it’s sequel, Through the Looking Glass, it aims only to draw on the inspiration of an fantastical world and the idea that stepping through the doors at TEDxSalem is like climbing through the mirror and into a new experience where people can expand their horizons, learn something new, and challenge what they (think) they already know.
