The big day is final­ly near. We can hard­ly believe it.

Here is every­thing you need to know about TEDxSalem IV — Rev­o­lu­tions— at Salem Con­ven­tion Cen­ter, 200 Com­mer­cial St. SE, Salem, OR 97301.

First off, despite some win­ter weath­er head­ed our way, TEDxSalem will go on. Please ensure your safe­ty first, but if you’re able to trav­el safe­ly to us, we will greet you with great pro­gram­ming!

Now, on to the nit­ty grit­ty.

SCHEDULE

8 a.m.: Reg­is­tra­tion and light break­fast

Come ear­ly for break­fast, min­gling, and to make sure you get the best seats pos­si­ble. But don’t be too com­mit­ted to them! We know we’re crea­tures of habit, but at TEDxSalem, we encour­age you to sit in dif­fer­ent parts of the the­ater so you can meet a vari­ety of fel­low atten­dees.

8:30 a.m.: The­ater doors open; seats are gen­er­al admis­sion

9 a.m.: Ses­sion one

One way to make your invest­ment pay off dur­ing the talks is to take copi­ous notes! Use them to reflect on after the event and think about how these rev­o­lu­tions are applic­a­ble in your own life and com­mu­ni­ty.

10:15 a.m.: Recess and snacks

TEDxSalem is not only about talks, though they are what we’re most known for. At an in-per­son TEDxSalem event, you also get to enjoy break­out ses­sions, some of which build upon the talks you just heard. Make sure to take advan­tage, and inter­act with all the fun stuff we have planned. This is also a great time to meet the speak­ers and event vol­un­teers!

11 a.m.: Ses­sion two

Anoth­er key to hav­ing a suc­cess­ful TEDx day is an open mind. You may hear some ideas that are uncom­fort­able or chal­leng­ing to your estab­lished world view. That’s OK. In fact, that’s the point! Just let that dis­com­fort sink and mar­i­nate. You may be pleas­ant­ly sur­prised where that leads you!

12:p.m.: Lunch recess

Do your home­work. Our blog is full of good info about our speak­ers. Read up and see whose talks excite you most. Have ques­tions? Seek them out dur­ing the lunch recess and pick their brains. They will be among all of us, eat­ing at the same tables!

1:30 p.m.: Ses­sion three

You prob­a­bly hear this enough, but net­work! TEDxSalem is a great place to find new mem­bers of your team, whether that is in the pro­fes­sion­al or per­son­al sense. Dis­cuss what each of you bring to the table and how you can col­lab­o­rate to cre­ate the types of rev­o­lu­tions we will be talk­ing about!

2:15 p.m.: Recess

Use the vol­un­teers as a resource. They will be the ones in the black T‑shirts. If there’s any­thing that they can do to improve your expe­ri­ence, just ask! Be sure to thank them. TEDxSalem is a 100 per­cent vol­un­teer-run event. They do this because they believe in our mis­sion of spread­ing new and inter­est­ing ideas.

3 p.m.: Ses­sion four

Are you a social media enthu­si­ast? So are we! Share what you’re enjoy­ing about the day on your accounts and use the hash­tag #tedxsalem. Just don’t over-do it. You don’t want to miss the mag­ic hap­pen­ing beyond your phone screen!

4:30: Event Fin­ish­es

4:30 to ? After­par­ty at Tap­root Lounge & Cafe

At TEDxSalem, it isn’t over, even after it’s over. Join us at Tap­root in down­town Salem to cel­e­brate the day and hang out some more. It is our hope that you make some last­ing mean­ing­ful con­nec­tions while you’re with us, so def­i­nite­ly take advan­tage of every oppor­tu­ni­ty to con­nect!

REGISTRATION/TICKETS

  • Starts at 8 a.m. (doors will be locked before that time, so please plan to be there no ear­li­er than 8AM).
  • Reg­is­tra­tion is locat­ed on the sec­ond floor Salem Con­ven­tion Cen­ter (see map below)
  • Look for our vol­un­teers wear­ing black TEDxSalem T‑shirts.
  • Name tags will be orga­nized by attendee’s last name, and you can pick it up at reg­is­tra­tion along with some great gifts.
  • Your name tag will be your pass for access to every­thing through­out the day: the ses­sions, the action breaks, the after par­ty.
  • No phys­i­cal tick­et is required. But please do bring your pho­to ID.
  • At this point, all name tags have been print­ed. If there is an issue with your name tag, one of our plan­ning team mem­bers will be there to help you at reg­is­tra­tion.
  • Doors to the the­ater open at 8:30 a.m., seat­ing is gen­er­al admis­sion, and entrance into the audi­to­ri­um will be first come, first serve.

S. Renee Mitchell: Art as survival

For S. Renee Mitchell, art is sur­vival.

This is not an over­state­ment.

For 25 years, Mitchell worked as a suc­cess­ful news­pa­per jour­nal­ist, most recent­ly for The Ore­gon­ian. This high­ly pub­lic role cov­ered up her inner strug­gle — the doubts, depres­sion, self-loathing.

Then she redis­cov­ered her cre­ativ­i­ty, and that saved her life, she says.

“Even­tu­al­ly, I came to a point where I need­ed to leave behind every­thing I pre­tend­ed to be, all the roles I played so well, all the belief sys­tems that no longer worked for me, and get back in tune with how to live my live authen­ti­cal­ly and with con­scious inten­tion,” she said in an email. “Art was in the cen­ter of that jour­ney that brought me back to myself.”
Now, Mitchell is a full-time teacher artist, design­er, poet and play­wright, among many oth­er cre­ative roles.
Mitchell and the upcom­ing TEDxSalem event may be a per­fect match. She calls her­self a Cre­ative Rev­o­lu­tion­ist, and works to help oth­ers find their cre­ative cen­ters so that they can “gath­er up and move on.”

Karen Holman: Punk rock chemist to speak on new anti-cancer drug

Karen Hol­man is a punk rock­er, radio DJ, and a chem­istry pro­fes­sor and researcher. She lives deeply in all three of those iden­ti­ties.

But at TEDxSalem, Hol­man’s sci­en­tist side will be on dis­play.

Hol­man was always inter­est­ed in sci­ence as a lit­tle girl, she said, and it was her non-end­ing ques­tion of “why?” that land­ed her in chem­istry.

“I want­ed to know what was hap­pen­ing to the mol­e­cules,” she said.

Hol­man, whose spe­cial­ty is in met­als, will share about the dis­cov­ery of met­al-based anti-can­cer drugs. She hopes to make the sci­ence behind this dis­cov­ery approach­able for audi­ences of all back­grounds, to learn about the bar­ri­ers med­ical sci­ence face in becom­ing acces­si­ble to patients, and become ener­gized about sci­en­tif­ic dis­cov­ery and inno­va­tion.

kh_chemlecture1Hol­man’s sci­ence career began at Willamette Uni­ver­si­ty, as an under­grad, and she also end­ed up at Willamette to estab­lish her teach­ing career.

 

It was through that jour­ney that she became a col­lege radio DJ and became inter­est­ed in alter­na­tive, met­al and punk rock music. While in Cal­i­for­nia for grad­u­ate school in the ’90s, Hol­man saw an all-girl punk band, which inspired her to play in bands of her own. You may rec­og­nize her as the gui­tarist for the City of Pieces, for exam­ple. But after all these years, she is just now in her first all-woman punk band called Hot Sheets.

Hol­man’s expe­ri­ence as a radio DJ also inspired her to even­tu­al­ly found KMUZ, Salem’s com­mu­ni­ty radio. She hosts two shows on it, and will soon start a third lat­er this month.

How TEDxSalem ended up with a majority woman speaker roster

The most impor­tant task for the orga­niz­ers of TEDxSalem is curat­ing inter­est­ing, chal­leng­ing and fun talks — the essence of a good TEDx con­fer­ence. And tru­ly awe­some talks are insep­a­ra­ble from the speak­ers’ iden­ti­ty.

Rep­re­sent­ing diverse abil­i­ties, cul­tur­al back­grounds and gen­der iden­ti­fi­ca­tion is key to putting on a well-round­ed event. Some of these goals came eas­i­er and more nat­u­ral­ly than oth­ers.

“Since we start­ed TEDxSalem, we have always strived for more diver­si­ty in our speak­er line-up. We want TEDxSalem to rep­re­sent a spec­trum of races, thoughts and ideas and we dreamed that one day we might have an event that was half male and half female,” co-cura­tor Bri­an Hart said. “Some years find­ing women proved very dif­fi­cult, not many were apply­ing and our efforts to reach out to some of the amaz­ing women in our area were not pan­ning out. Rather than get­ting frus­trat­ed, it was a chal­lenge that we took on with Mox­ie, we knew we could do bet­ter.”

This year, the seeds we have been plant­i­ng over the past three years, reach­ing out to women that we admire and want to show­case, seem to final­ly be sprout­ing. Out of 13 speak­ers, 11 of them are women.

“What was once a dream of hav­ing a 50/50 ratio has been sur­passed by a woman dom­i­nat­ed line-up,” Hart said. “We could­n’t be more thrilled.”

How did this hap­pen?

Well first, we built rela­tion­ships with poten­tial women speak­ers that did not pan out in pre­vi­ous years, but sev­er­al of whom agreed to speak this year. Sec­ond, we hap­pened to pick most­ly women in our blind (as in no names or bio­graph­i­cal data) selec­tion process from our appli­cant pool. Com­bine the two process­es togeth­er, and we end­ed up with 11 women.

And trust us, these women are doing some amaz­ing work out in the world and they very much need to be heard — not for their sake, but for ours.

Achiev­ing the per­fect bal­ance may not be pos­si­ble, but tak­ing spe­cial care to rep­re­sent the tra­di­tion­al­ly under­rep­re­sent­ed is a goal that is worth the effort. Feel free to keep us account­able, but real­ly, help us expand and deep­en our reach into diverse com­mu­ni­ties.
